Be a Part of the Bicycling Boom

The Bay Area, like much of the country, is in a bicycling boom. Last year, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) released their annual bike count report, which indicated that people made over 200,000 more trips by bike than in the previous year – an 8.5 percent increase in just one year. In the past decade, biking in San Francisco is up by 184 percent!  A great time to join the movement is during the month of May, National Bike Month, for month-long events and workshops.

May 11 is Bike to Work Day in the Bay Area

The Bay Area’s biggest bicycling day of the year is coming up fast! The 23rd annual Bay Area Bike to Work Day is Thursday, May 11, 2017, with all nine counties celebrating as a part of National Bike Month.

Why bike to work?

More than one million Bay Area residents live within five miles of their workplaces, which is an ideal distance for bicycling. Beyond that, commuting to work only makes up 23 percent of all trips people make by car. From climate change and pollution to congestion and public health, a little bit of bicycling makes a difference in your neighborhood and the world.

Are you or someone you know bike-curious, but not yet comfortable biking in the city? May is the perfect time to get rolling. On Bike to Work Day, tens of thousands of people will bike to work across the Bay Area — with many being first-time bike commuters. Beyond that, the month is packed full of bike rides, workshops and social events all over the Bay Area. Visit your local Bicycle Advocacy organizations webpage and plug in:

East – Bike East Bay

North – Marin County Bicycle Coalition

South – Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition

Statewide – California Bicycle Coalition

We hope you can get rolling to work, to shop, to school, for errands, for social events or whatever the occasion in May and beyond!
